It’s a lot of fun to include twiddles surprises on your twiddles creations. I like to imagine the excitement when a recipient opens a zip, or undoes a button, to find a securely attached twiddles surprise inside.
What are twiddle surprises? Twiddle surprises fit comfortably in a hand and are soft, encouraging finger movements. Small zips are perfect to use on your mat. Zips can be added to a pocket, even placed in a seam. All mats are backed so any twiddle surprise behind a zip in a seam is safe. Zips can be incorporated into the design, for example, a tree trunk shown in the photo below.

Twiddle surprises can also be a stand-alone twiddle, particularly the octopus.

You can find lots of small teddy patterns on the internet and at sites such as Ravelry, https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/childs-cardigan-in-possum-yarn-with-a-teddy It was this lovely child’s cardigan that I made for my granddaughter that lead me to making a small teddy surprise to attach to a pocket in a twiddle mat.
And the small round smiley face is made of two sides joined together, remember to put some stuffing inside and add a decorative edging. Both of these items fit comfortably in a recipient’s hand providing lots of comfort.
