Covered Buttons

Buttons are so useful to attach and create interesting twiddle items to engage recipients’ hands. At the same time buttons can be problematic for patients. They can look like sweets, encouraging patients to pull and tug on them until they can get them off the twiddle mat, muff or cuff. If they put them in their mouths they can choke.

One solution for bigger buttons is to cover them, either partially or completely.

The button is firmly attached to a mat and hopefully well disguised so it remains on the twiddle creation.

There are endless possibilities of ways to use buttons safely. Have fun exploring.

Overtime I have become wary of using buttons as decorative pieces. When I do as in the photos above, I use embroidery thread because of its strength, followed by lots of tugging by my husband to see if it will come off the twiddle mat, cuff or mat.

As always, enjoy exploring, have fun.

Happy creating!
