Pocket Heart Hugs

Here’s a little pocket hug,

Full of loves, warm & snug

So keep it close & squeeze it tight

And know you are loved.

Pocket heart hugs are fun to make and special to give

Have you heard of pocket hugs? Stories about pocket hugs can be found on the internet, however I’m unsure of their origin. They can be made from many different materials – felt, wood, cotton or like so many people do – collect and paint stones. These are ideal as a standalone gift for anyone with dementia, anxiety issues, or for someone who needs a hug or cheering up, for someone special as a thank you, or even a stranger whose day you want to brighten up.   These are also perfect for pre schoolers who are learning routines like sitting on the floor to listen to a story.   You can put the little poem in a card, attach the pocket hug and someone knows you care.  I’m sure you can think of many uses for these magic pocket hugs. We always have to be mindful of safety issues when making twiddle items for a patient with dementia or delirium. So here are some ideas to start you thinking about pocket heart hugs or as I like to think of them, twiddle surprises.

Here is how I make my pocket heart hugs

1. Make two plain heart pieces & twirls, or whatever decoration you want. I have added 2 kisses. Sometimes I attach a twiddles twirl.

You may want to leave it plain.

2. Stitch the 2 heart pieces together by placing the needle through 1 side of the V shape.

3. Stop when you are 3/4 around the heart and fill the inside to make it squashy.

4. Finish off stitching the 2 pieces together and very carefully darn in the yarn so it doesn’t come undone.

Here are two I made for my grandchildren attached to a note similar to the words above. Create your own message to fit the occasion. I am sure it will be treasured

Simple crochet heart patterns I often use, is found at:

You could adapt your favourite heart pattern to make this pocket hug or even make one using.

As well, I like to crochet the following edging around the heart. Start anywhere, chain 2 or 3, slip stitch into next stitch and repeat around the item.

Happy creating everyone!
